CMF sets seven priorities in its 2026-2029 Indigenous Action Plan
The Canada Media Fund released Answering the Call, a three-year Indigenous Action Plan with seven priorities, after what it calls a nearly two-year process.
Why this matters: our read
Seven priorities describe direction. The change already in effect is administration: the Indigenous Program now sits with the Indigenous Screen Office.
On September 14 the Canada Media Fund (CMF) published its 2026-2029 Indigenous Action Plan, Answering the Call. The CMF says the plan came out of a nearly two-year process that included focus groups, an industry engagement phase and an Indigenous Industry Participation survey.
The CMF lists seven priorities: Indigenous ownership and narrative sovereignty; production and creation capacity; CMF responsiveness and Indigenous participation in its programs; visibility of Indigenous content in Canada and abroad; institutional allyship across the sector; Indigenous data sovereignty; and Indigenous engagement and representation within the CMF itself.
The CMF says the survey pointed to four priority areas: getting funding, complicated applications, mentorship, and barriers tied to region and market access.
Separately, the CMF notes that it moved administration of its Indigenous Program to the Indigenous Screen Office in 2025-2026.
